This week American Airlines announced that they were buying 6,000 Samsung Android Tablets for deployment in their First and Business Class Cabins.
It’s a smart move. These American Airline branded devices will be loaded with rich media, replacing the need for expensive and unreliable traditional seat back and armrest systems. Since many of American’s transcontinental routes are wifi enabled there is the added bonus of connectivity.
This very much gives the passenger complete control. True some of the latest Video On Demand systems are great but you can hear the collective grown when the flight attendant announces that the system is down. This represents a huge costs saving to the airline and is simply responding to behaviour already exhibited by passengers. I will often use the airlines personal viewing screen to hold my iPad as I enjoy my own selection on a bigger screen.
