An iconic sound – London 1 New York O

London has one thing that New York does not and that is an iconic sound – well if you ignore the ever present horn blowing of a Yellow Cab.       Since my very first trip to London to the present day the sound of “Big Ben” chiming always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand tall – although not as tall as the 315 foot St Stephen’s Tower on top of which lies the clock mechanism and the bell which is called “Big Ben” (The bell was probably named after Sir Benjamin Hall, Comissioner of Works, whose name is inscribed on the bell.

Tomorrow, Saturday 11th July 2009, London celebrates the 150th Anniversary of  the very first chime.     Not even the Luftwaffe could silence it.
